mmMMEDITATION...NOT JUST FOR MONKS ANYMORE!
From celebrities, to athletes, executives, weekend warriors, retirees, and preschoolers, so many people are discovering and embracing the desire to live in a more centered, peaceful frame of mind that reflects their core values. The practice of meditation is a vehicle. Those who choose to ride find meditation to be as essential as breathing in their daily lives.
Meditation is the single most effective way to improve your health and doesn't require money, cooking, or perspiration!
If it sounds easy, well it is! Anyone can meditate and begin enjoying the life-changing benefits of controlling one's own thoughts, rather than being controlled by them.
What exactly is meditation? Meditation is an act of being, rather that an act of doing (we are human beings after all). It is when we go to the silence that exists within. This is where we find the profound deep peace when our mind is calm and silent and yet aware.
During meditation, we have an intention point of awareness. It may be a mantra, our breath, a sound, a visual. Then, we also have our internal monkey chatter thoughts and other distractions. While practicing, we draw our attention to the point of awareness and away from the monkey chatter. We may then drift back to the distractions, then back to the point of awareness. That "In between" is where we experience our meditation. Drifting to that space between our thoughts is where we reconnect to the silence within, experience the present moment, and our true selves.
Practicing sustained awareness in meditation--in a relaxed, non-judgmental state-- is how we develop this ability for our daily walking around lives. Check out the implications! If we learn to draw our awareness from distractions, unpleasantness or conflict, during meditation, and carry those abilities to everyday thinking and doing, the possibilities are amazing! We develop the ability to take our awareness and energy away from stress, and bring ourselves to a more centered place. We live our lives, then, not by engaging in emotional reactions. Instead, we act based on our value systems. The benefits to our health and well-being are profound!
Hundreds of medical studies support the fact that our thoughts and emotions change our body chemistry. Negative thoughts have negative effects on cells and create maladies. Positive thoughts support good health and vibrancy. If, for example, you keep retelling the story of a negative incident, (within your brain or to others), your body responds to the emotions of that story as though it was happening again, and again, and again!
